Do I Have to Wear My Retainer After Orthodontic Treatment?

November 1, 2024

Even if you straightened your teeth with a convenient set of clear aligners, you were probably excited for your treatment to be over. But once your orthodontist removed your metal wires and brackets or gave you the “ok” to stop wearing your aligners, they went on to explain you’ll have to wear yet another oral appliance. You were really looking forward to your teeth being free, so what’s the deal? Is it really that important to wear your retainer?

Without a doubt! And doing so might not be as bad as you’re thinking. Keep reading to get the scoop on these post-orthodontic appliances.

Retainers Are Anti-Dental Relapse Devices

You read that correctly. Teeth are incredibly resilient, which can be both a blessing and a curse. They tend to want to shift back to their original positions, even after extensive orthodontic treatment. The good news is that this movement happens very gradually and is often easily prevented with a retainer. They’re designed specifically for your unique smile, and will keep your teeth in place – as long as you wear them as instructed!

Do Your Wallet a Favor

Orthodontic treatment isn’t exactly cheap. While many patients find the investment worth their while, they’re not as fond of the idea of having to get a second treatment. If your teeth relapse because you’re not wearing your retainer properly, it’s possible the only way to re-straighten your smile would be to undergo the orthodontic process all over again – which means paying for it all over again!

You’ll Hardly Notice Your Retainer is There

Fortunately, retainers are often slimmer and less noticeable than their treatment counterparts. Removable retainers are typically clear or gum-colored, and usually only need to be inserted at night. Fixed retainers are even easier to wear, even though they’re meant to be a long-term device. Your orthodontist will simply cement a thin wire to the back of your teeth. In either case, you’ll hardly notice that they’re in your mouth!

Needing a retainer after patiently progressing through orthodontic treatment might not sound like fun. However, these devices actually empower your smile by helping to keep your pearly whites in place. Wearing them isn’t so bad, either. Retainers tend to be low-profile, and you won’t have to keep them on all day like you would for metal braces or clear aligners. Insert and care for them as instructed by your orthodontist and enjoy your newly straightened teeth!
